  • NBB 02/07/2024 – Sad news

    Robert Hamilton Wedgwood (1948-2024)

The Wedgwood community mourns the death of Robert H. Wedgwood, 75, of Palm Springs, California, on February 7, 2024. Bob served as president of the Wedgwood Society of Southern California for many years, was on the boards of the WIS and WSNY, and a long-time member of the WSB and other related societies. He also acted as an advisor to the Wedgwood 250th exhibition in DC. His collecting focused on Wedgwood’s handcrafted wares and artists pieces of the 19th and 20th centuries. Among his many lectures was one on his Wedgwood ancestry from the 15th century. Bob was a retiree of the IRS’s business division in California. He is a native of Andover, Massachusetts, and has strong roots in New England. He is survived by his sister Dawn Forbes of MA and his twin brother William of NH. Bob will be cremated and his ashes interred in the family plot in Connecticut at a later date. RIP.

    Wedgwood Royalty by Aileen Dawson.

    Wedgwood and Royalty

Please join the WSB video-conference on Sunday, March 10, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. EDT, for a special lecture on “Wedgwood and Royalty” presented by a former department curator at the British Museum and author, Aileen Dawson. It will explore the continuing relationship of the Wedgwood factory to the British royal family from the early days to the present time. Portraits of numerous members of the royal family reflect their popularity and signal significant royal events, while services ordered for tea-drinking, dining, or even for use in the dairy at Windsor all contribute to a fascinating story of the British monarchy and Wedgwood, the most iconic Staffordshire pottery.

PLEASE NOTE WE CHANGE TO DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME IN BOSTON, ON THIS DAY, SO ALLOW FOR THIS ADJUSTMENT SO YOU WON’T BE DISAPPOINTED.

  • Meeting 1/14/2024:

Shell-Shock: Centuries of Wedgwood’s Shell Fancying

Some wonder why shell-shaped objects have had a strong presence in the Wedgwood company’s product range for over the last two and a half centuries. It all began with Josiah Wedgwood I himself. His inspiration for creating such specimens in the clay form was his fondness at an early age for natural shells and fossils, amassing a large collection which he displayed in his father’s pottery.

Please join the Wedgwood Society of Boston’s video-conference on Sunday, January 14, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. EST, for Adele Ierubino Barnett’s talk on this fascinating topic chronicling the evolution of products since the founding of the Wedgwood company in 1759. Abundant in images, the lecture illustrates the vast array of the brand’s shell shapes and their body types, glazes, decorations, and uses, while providing a brief history of seashell collecting among the aristocracy in the UK.

Adele has been collecting Wedgwood since 1969 with a focus on blue jasper. It was her husband Alan’s collecting of seashells while in Japan – which led to his collecting Wedgwood’s ceramic versions – that inspired her to research the subject. Adele is a past president of WSB, the founder of the Wedgwood Society of Washington, D.C., and has served on the boards of many related organizations.
